Hi All...

Hope this isn't too silly of a question. I have been ripping my DVD library using the usual MTR/Handbrake workflow. I finally got around to watching a movie streamed to my appleTV connected to a Vizio 42" LCD flatscreen. The movie we was Meet the Parents - Widescreen Edition. Normally when I watch a widescreen movie on my 42" tv using a DVD player I have the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. I actually don't mind that as I enjoy the fact that I am viewing it in widescreen....more viewing area. I ripped the movie using Handbrake (ATV settings with a few minor adjustments such as two pass encoding)......there were no black bars on either the top of the bottom of the screen when viewing on the atv. Is this normal? I haven't done a test yet to see if anything was being cropped horizontally. Basically I just want to be sure that Handbrake is not "changing" anything with the overall viewing area.

thanks!

It should remain the same if anamorphic is set to strict and crop to automatic in your picture settings. Was this a double-sided DVD with a full screen version on one side? I've ripped a few of those by mistake before.

anamorphic is set to strict.....Not sure if I was clear or not in my post....the picture fills up the whole screen on my tv whereas usually I have the black bars when viewing from a dvd player. Definitely was not a two sided disc....have had the same issue before with not reading the very fine writing on the disc...fullscreen/widescreen. So another question.....if anamorphic is set to strict......does this mean I am viewing it "widescreen" only magnified to fill the whole screen as opposed to viewing the dvd through a dvd player? Seems to me then when Handbrake does its encoding thing for the atv it is giving you a better viewing experience over a standard dvd player with its black bars....

It really doesn't work that way. You must have encoded with a crop or something. Maybe your TV has a different zoom or AFF (auto full frame) feature enabled for the input your Apple TV is connected to.

Have you tried playing another movie or just Meet the Parents?
