Netflix Begins Streaming to the Mac

Netflix today announced it has begun the deployment of Microsoft Silverlight to enhance the instant watching component of the Netflix service and to allow subscribers for the first time to watch movies and TV episodes instantly on their Intel-based Mac. The deployment, which will initially touch a small percentage of new Netflix subscribers, is the first step in an anticipated roll-out of the new platform to all Netflix subscribers by the end of the year.

| I guess the key here is with "new Netflix subscribers". They're probably looking for new users that register from a Mac. It's also a way of enticing new people to sign up. The rest of us will just have to wait. |

I've also been waiting for this one. When this becomes available, I may finally be able to get that PC out of my man-cave. I could just about lead a windoze-less existence.
Instant watch is addictive. It's ruined more than one Saturday for me

I wish we had a service like Netflix in the UK. All you lucky people in the states can use your 360's to stream Netflix in the next update as well  .

I tried this out last night. I am a longtime Netflix subscriber and had no issues opting in to the beta.
I had used this service on my iMac via BootCamp previously, so I knew what to expect. Last night I watched a couple episodes of "Dexter" back to back on my Mini (attached to my tube TV via S-Video) plopped on the couch instead of hunched in front of the iMac. Nice.
There seems to be no difference from the Windows version. Issues with picture quality due to bandwidth (and mystery Netflix-side server issues) exist as they do on Windows. The first episode downgraded itself a couple of times and became annoyingly blurry (but watchable), the second episode retained a better overall quality level for the whole 50+ minutes. Can't complain!
I'm thinking about upping my 1.5Mbs DSL to something fatter to hopefully get better picture quality overall. |

Been streaming Netflix to OS 10.5.8 with Silverlight on Firefox and Safari for quite some time now. So this article is way off, it sounds like Mac users never had this and are getting it for the first time or something.
Now perhaps for Snow Leopard users yes, as it's a new OS and Microsoft has to make a new version of Silverlight for it. Perhaps some clarification is in order?
Anyway Netflix (or the owners of the content) only allows some videos to be streamed this way, not many neither. So your back to either getting a Roku or DVD's in the mails.
Now what is interesting is the PS3 will be allowing Netflix streaming in a few months, and since it's a HDMI/HDCP compliant device, that means the content is protected from casual copying, unlike the Mac. So all of Netflix's content should be available for streaming on the PS3, just like it is on the Xbox.
Oh yea, no extra charge for streaming. It really saves everyone a lot of money.
