That's cool!
It also makes a lot of sense. The Mac mini is super small, quiet, headless, energy efficient and cheap. What other Mac fits the bill so well for business? 10,000 Mac Pros would just be overkill. They could also cause the lights to dim on the strip. |

Sounds great, but I think it should be DVI + Mini DisplayPort. I think the need for an adapter could scare some people away. Unless it takes away room for a firewire port. Then I say screw the other people out there. |

I will never in my life understand why apple has never really included adapters that 90%+ of the buyers will need. Only one I have ever gotten was the DVI to VGA adapter that came with my mini. A much cheaper adapter than most are.
Anyway.. the new mini sounds like it will be good. I doubt it will have the new Nvidia GPU from the new portables though. I bet it will have the intel 3100 which is at least an upgrade from the 950 as the 3100 actually supports hardware rendering which the 950 does not. |

Guess I just have Macs on the mind.
Then again, maybe I was thinking Mac midi. That could account for the d.

Yeah, I'm thinking it will be the Intel GMA X3100 or 4500MHD. |

Given the fact that they're putting the nVidia 9400M into all their new laptops (even the MacBook Air), I think it's safe to assume that they're also going to use it in the Mac mini.
Looking at it from a business angle, it only make sense, too:
(let's assume they are phasing out the old plastic MacBook)
- it lowers the cost of the 9400M because they make even bigger bulk purchases of that chip if the Mac mini and iMac use the same parts as the MacBook and MacBook Pro (9400M = all computers, 9600M GT = higher iMacs, MacBook Pro)
- less inventory problems to keep 1 part (9400M) instead of 2 parts (9400M for all new laptops and 950/3100/4500 GPU for Mac mini only)
- it simplifies things on the software side if all the new computers have the same baseline capabilities (especially for Snow Leopard and OpenCL)
We still don't know if there's really going to be an update or a replacement, anyway. And if there is, will the case be the same? After all the current case already is made from aluminium, the only thing I can see them changing is the top, by replacing the plastic with glass, possibly black underneath.
With the way things are going though, I'm expecting a smaller footprint and shorter Mac nano. Given the height of the new MacBook I'm pretty sure we can expect a 1.5~1.75" thin Mac nano, possibly smaller than 6.5 x 6.5" (maybe even the footprint of the MacBook Air external drive, i.e. 5.47 x 5.47"). I also wouldn't be surprised to see the 2.5" drive replaced by a 1.8" drive like the MacBook Air.
This would allow Apple to declare the Mac nano "the smallest, full-featured consumer desktop ever made". Steve does seem to like saying things like that. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

I just wish they would start using open industry standards instead of changing things every 2-4 years. To be honest, this proprietary Mini DisplayPort even has me concerned. Are they ever going to release adapters for people with DVI? I'm talking about for the new Cinema. Your guess is as good as mine.

That would be a deal breaker for me. It's like a major bottleneck in the MacBook Air. I would much rather see them use a standard 2.5" SATA drive, especially with capacities on the move now. |

I'd rather have a 3.5" drive in a taller/bigger Mac mini. It makes for less expensive components and a faster drive with a much higher capacity. However, it also makes far more heat and I've become accustomed to the quietness of my Mac mini. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

Just release something like this....
- 2.4GHz Intel C2D
- 2GB RAM
- 160GB HDD
- Nvidia 9400M
- SuperDrive
- 802.11n and Bluetooth
- Firewire and four USB
- Digital audio in and out
- Apple remote
Price = $799
That's all it would take for me to order, so come on already! Whatcha waiting for? _________________ FooBooRoo |

I would much rather pay $20-30 more and get to use my new computer out of the box rather than have to go buy an adapter or know to order one even. |

| I vote for DVI (with Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter included) plus HDMI like the Dell hybrid. Why should Apple go with a Mini DisplayPort when there's only one display on the market that supports it? That seems stupid to me. |

| Steve Jobs said all the new products will have the Mini DisplayPort, but I have a hard time believing they will totally abandon DVI on the Mac mini. Especially considering the target audience of switchers and users with their own displays. |

Mini display port is not a proprietary port. It is industry standard. What other ports came out in the last 2-4 years? The adapter will be 3rd party
more than likely.

DisplayPort is an open standard, but things aren't as clear when it comes to the Mini DisplayPort.

Yeah, I hear what your saying and just because one company only uses it, doesn't make it proprietary. Proprietary usually means trademarked or owned but, it's all semantics. Do i think other companies will jump on mini display port? no. Will they jump on display port? Yeah, some already have Leveno, HP, and dell. It's a free license fee as opposed to HDMI. Higher res is the biggy. Mini-DVI is also a supposed standard that only apple uses. I don't care as long as there are adapters.....

I agree with what you are saying. That being said, it would be nice to see Apple explain this a little more. At least give more details about the new Cinema display. Will they offer a DVI/VGA to Mini DisplayPort adapter for it? Your guess is as good as mine. |
