OpenOffice 3.0 Released

OpenOffice.org today announced the release of OpenOffice 3.0, a major update of their free cross-platform office application suite. The big news with this release is that it includes native support for Mac OS X. There's no longer a need for X11 windowing software. Other highlights of OpenOffice 3.0 include: ODF 1.2 support; Microsoft Office 2007 Import Filters; Support for displaying custom error bars and regression equations; and an improved Crop Feature in Draw and Impress. OpenOffice 3.0 weighs in at 163MB and requires an Intel-based Mac. The OpenOffice.org servers are pretty busy at the moment, so here's another mirror if you run into trouble.

I've got Office for Mac, more out of convenience than anything else. I don't really like it that much. Its not Office and its not Mac, but more like a bad attempt at combining the two. Should I consider Open Office?

I now use NeoOffice as my main office application. I haven't let Ms Office anywhere near my Mac in the last 12 months and I've managed fine with NeoOffice and iWork.

I got Microsoft Office 2008; but I hardly use it. Of all I prefer iWork, I feel it allows more creativity, and it converts Microsoft docs (word, excel, etc...) pretty well. Only reason why I got Mic. Office was cause of Excel, but was devastated to find out no add-ins are available (like Mega-Stat), and Microsoft has done nothing about it. ...so I've really enjoyed Numbers. |

I agree with Cypher. OpenOffice is definitely worth a try. It's clean, fast and stable. I'm not sure that can be said about Office 2008 at this point. iWork is a different story. I think it's the best office suite for the Mac right now. It's a compete no-brainer at $70 bucks. |

Almost every Linux distro comes loaded with OO, which is a pity in a way, because there is an equally good WP that rarely gets a gurnsey..
That is Abiword...its a far smaller program with almost the same range of capacities. In some ways, its better than OO as well..
Finally : if you reckon OO is fast, then you won't believe the speed of Abiword.

I've never considered OO to be fast. Abiword is great...but it is nice having a more complete office suite like OO. I've used Abiword a lot on lower end hardware (with linux)...been a fan for several years.
I DO own iWork and typically use NeoOffice as well. Has anyone used this new OO version yet? I'd love to a see a high-level comparison between it and NeoOffice. (maybe I'll have time this evening to install it myself)

The one thing I find frustrating in relation to Abi vs OO is that neither of them can read each others' native format. ABW & ODF.
For the Linux / Unix / GNU community, this has got to be the biggest & dumbest joke of all.

just downloaded and installed OO. I have to say, I really like how it's one application and you select the type of document you intend to prepare from the main screen. No need to have three icons in my dock any more! I'll give it a go but, I typically use iWork for these tasks, and unfortunately still use MS Office 2004 because sometimes iWork can't render the documents exactly the same way.....
