Mac Mini Updates?
Wednesday September 21, 2005
Think Secret is reporting that Apple will be quietly updating the Mac mini in the next week or so. The Mac mini just received minor upgrades in July. According to Think Secret, the low-end Mac mini will be upgraded from a 1.25GHz G4 processor to a 1.33GHz G4, while the high-end will see an equally modest bump from 1.42GHz to 1.5GHz. Hard drive capacities are expected to remain the same but will be upgraded from 4,200-rpm drives to 5,400-rpm. The mid-range and high-end models will receive a new AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth module featuring Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. Lastly, the high-end model will see its 4x SuperDrive upgraded to an 8x dual-layer model.
Pricing will remain the same at $499, $599, and $699.

Dang! Right when I thought I had my mac mini set, now comes an upgrade. What do you guys think? If and when they do have an update, is it worth getting? Would you guys get the update? My specs for my mini on in my signature. Let me know..... _________________ 1.42 Ghz Mac Mini

I don't know your specs look pretty good to me. I might upgrade if they make all of the changes and add better video. My Mac mini does not have a SuperDrive or AE/Bluetooth. I have always regretted not getting those options. All you are getting is better video, faster hard drive and Bluetooth 2.0. |

Why didn't Apple announce this at Apple Expo in Paris? It seems a little strange. |

If you don't already have a mini, this seems like a good time to get into the game. However, for me, it doesn't really address any of the shortcomings. I need a faster drive (7200), two ram slots and a decent video card. They can add pretty much any other features besides those and I just won't bite.
To be fair though . . . it's nice to see that Apple hasn't completely lost sight of it's computer division. I may have a stroke if I see the word "iPod" one more time. |

jthawke,
I use a ministack with a 400gig 7200rpm drive as my boot drive. It works great and makes the mini feel soooooooooooooooooo much faster. I have it partitioned into an 80 gig boot volume and a 320 gig scratch volume for video editing (I know that sharing a single drive doesn't give you the real benefit of a separate scratch drive). I use the internal mini drive to backup the boot volume on the ministack...
But I'm definitely tempted by the new minis to replace my current one, particularly if they upgrade the gpu too. I've done some HDV video editing and would love better performance on playback...

With my mini, do you think its really necessary for an upgrade? I mean, I have 2 LaCie 250GB hard drives. One firewire and one USB. I'm using the firewire as my boot drive and yes my mini seems faster. I would love to do my video editing, but I'm just waiting for a good camera. I guess I shouldn't really think about upgrading not unless they do uprgrade the video card. _________________ 1.42 Ghz Mac Mini

A poster over at MacRumors claims he has already got the new Revision w/ 1.5 GHz and 64 MB VRAM. He even provided screenshots of his System Profiler. But, of course it's not too difficult to fake those. _________________ 17" iMac Core Duo / stock 1.25 GHz mini (512 MB) |

I was going to buy one this weekend but if they are going to update the thing I might have to wait.
Anyone know the deal?
