Apple Announces iTunes 8
Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Posted by: Glenn
Apple today announced iTunes 8, the next major release of Apple's ubiquitous music and video player for Macs and PCs. iTunes 8 includes the new breakthrough Genius feature, which lets you automatically create playlists from songs in your music library that go great together—with just one click. Genius helps music fans rediscover favorite songs in their existing music library and suggests related music on the iTunes Store they might want to add to their music collection. iTunes 8 also features new ways of viewing your music and video libraries, and adds television programs in stunning high definition for sale on the iTunes Store.

| The grid view is really nice. I especially like having the slider to make the album art larger. I do not like the Genius thingy that much though. I might be missing something, but it just seems like glorified mini store. I already turned it off. |

I'm getting beach balls galore on my Mac mini and MacBook Pro with iTunes 8. I never really noticed iTunes acting this way before. It just feels slow. |

Don't care for the Genius Sidebar, but the grid view is pretty slick. I'm also excited about the HD stuff even though $2.99 is a tad steep. I probably would have been more excited to see them bring over the movie rentals in HD from the Apple TV. Ok, back to playing Spore. |

Those icons in the Grid View really pop off the screen at you. It almost looks like you can grab them. At least on my display they do. I'm not sold on the Genius sidebar, but the playlist feature has potential. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I think my "Genius" might have a learning disability. |

Random thoughts...
Grid view is awesome for movies.
The entire Genuis thing is lame if you ask me. It also seems to hog memory when turned on.
The new visualizer is hypnotizing.
HD shows are too expensive, but look nice.
Cover Flow seems to be smoother.
NBC got their way with pricing. It's good to have them back.
All in all, a decent update. I'm sold. |

| I actually think the Genius playlists feature works well. Enough so to create a quick playlist. The sidebar is obviously a blatant attempt for Apple to sell songs, but it's still neat. I just have trouble making all this information available to Apple. It's a little big-brotherish, if you know what I mean |

I love the new features except for a few minor things and i do mean minor.
1. Itunes 8 is programmed to look at your library and find all the information on your albums. But instead it misses half of them or cannot find it because it doesn't have the cd cover in the library from itunes.
2. If you have weird music in Itunes Techno or even odd songs the genius bar says i am sorry we don't know this song or album and cannot recommend anything at this time.
3. Several of my songs that i purchased from the itunes store where removed because of changes in itunes or songs apple removed from the service so now i lost $13.00 worth of music thanks to itunes 8.
4. Video playback Wow this sucks in itunes 8 i have a bunch of south park episodes and all of them play badly after updating itunes and quicktime.
Far from this not bad i really enjoy the features i just wish apple would let us know about songs that are being removed from itunes. |

I'm not a fan of the Genius idea so have left that disabled. I don't like apple or anyone else knowing my history and preferences. I've noticed a few times on Amazon that when I left stuff in my basket awaiting pay day that the price has been increased before I go to pay.
Grid view is ok, and looks quite slick but it did take an age to fill out first time I tried it.
Also like the add number to show unplayed podcasts etc. and in Grid view having the NEW tab to show all new podcasts. _________________ Phil

I like that feature as well. It sort of has an iPhone flare. I also turned the Genius off. I don't like the idea of them having my information either. I probably wouldn't use it that much anyways. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Is anyone using an AppleTV with iTunes 8 currently?
I'm cautious to upgrade until I hear that there are people out there who have done so and not had any issues syncing with AppleTV. |
