I am new to the Mac World. Just got my mini on Thursday and really like it. I am now using it to control a WinXp Pro box with Microsoft's free Remote Desktop Client.
It cranks. The issue with the screen being dark WAS the DVI to VGA interface and how it fits to the mac.. Snug it up and works great.
Anyway. I like the board and look forward to finding additional help here.

When I'm forced to use a Windows machine it's like going back in time. OS X is like a Cadillac and XP is like a Yugo. |

The UI is "ok"...however, spyware and adware have gotten out of control. And with, seemingly, everone insisting on browsing the web with administrative privledges, it's just going to get worse.
Of course, you also have the issues of instability, Windows being spyware in and of itself, constant security patching, etc, etc... no THANKS!

Wierd, I've run stable, virus free, adware free Windows boxes for years. Perhaps the sterotype has more to do with the numbers of less that savy computer users.

It has a lot to do with the sites you visit coupled with whether you browse day to day with an administer account. This year is going to be worse than ever. If you haven't gotten infected yet, you WILL BE (if you are using an admin account, that is).
Check here to see how malware free you truly are.
OS X gets it right in regards to admin accounts.

Yeah, of course I run as an admin account. I have a virus checker installed and I run adaware frequently (which turns up nothing). We have a firewall and we never open email attachments. We visit good solid sites only (yahoo, google, amazon, etc). I really think the hype of adware and viri for Windows is way overblown. I know lots of people that have never been infected and have no adware. As far as usage, I'm a developer so I'm always on my machine and I'm always tracking stuff down on the net.
That's not to say I don't like my new Mini or I don't think it's better than XP in certain areas, I just don't find the gap that wide in my personal experience.

adware and spyware IS a big deal. You are the exception, not the rule. I see it every day.
The best thing to do is, if you have to run windows, don't use an admin account for normal use (this is like running as root all the time under unix) and don't use IE. This is ESPECIALLY true for those "less than savvy" users.
There is money to be made in adware...that is why it is definitely going to get worse this year.

Adware and spyware is an absolutely huge issue, and like mavherzog says, it's only going to get worse.
The amount of spyware I have to deal with at work is just staggering. We've got about 1500 pcs running Win2K. XP isn't an option for the time being. It's a never-ending battle. Clean a machine up, and it's a cess pit again within a week.
Hopefully we'll license and roll out an anti-spyware app this year, but someone's got to budget for it.
I'm glad I'm not a Desktop Support tech, or I'd be feeling pretty hopeless. They're fighting a losing battle.
OS X and Linux have an opportunity to make huge gains over the next couple of years while Microsoft struggles with the spyware issue. |

The fact that u have to have spyware and virus checkers installed and running on ur machine is bull shit enough.
I had to format my windows xp machine once a month because i like a clean comp without spyware and viruses ruining my computing experience. I switched from xp to os x by buying a mac mini and it is a helluva lot better than windows.
Im probably not going to go back to windows for my main computer. |

BTW, I'm finally playing with MY mini (previously was only working on my kids' as mine hadn't shipped). Doing a fresh install right now.

Curious as to how long the process would take. Also didn't want all of the software that was installed (and also wanted to install X11)...so I figured I'd go ahead and do a clean install...
