Jeez, I wish my mobile phone had a built-in camera!

I've just been into town (Redcar) and stuck to the corner window of Argos is a black circular poster, about 24" diameter (60cm) which says in white writing:

New iPod Range
In store now

I didn't think that this had been officially announced...

What's more, when I checked the MP3 section of Argos' website, there are no iPods available.

Not the iPods themselves - I just saw the promotional poster which I assume wasn't meant to be displayed until Apple had made an official announcement.

Even so, if I could have got a snap of the poster and uploaded it, I feel sure that MacRumours and AppleInsider would have been very interested. (Come to think of it, Apple UK would have been pretty "interested" as well! Wink )

Might I suggest you high tail it back down to that store with a photographic device so that we here at 123MM may decide for ourselves. Wink

(and before Argos figures out the blunder)

Hackers, I'd love to - if only to get my 15 minutes of fame as CNet, Engadget and the rumour sites reprint my photo on their own pages. But I still haven't bought a digital camera. Embarassed

However! I went into the store. Before I tell you what happened, I should explain how Argos works. Every Argos store is about 10-20% 'shopfront' and 80-90% stockroom. The way that you browse the available products is by looking through one of the many the copies of the Argos catalogue that they laminate and put on display in the 'shopfront' part of the building. If you want to buy, you write the product code on a piece of paper, take it to an assistant and the stockroom people find it and send to the storefront. They also give away copies of their catalogue that you can take home and browse.

So, I went into the store and asked two separate "assistants" about the promotional ads announcing the arrival of the new iPods:
- "What promotional ads?"
- "Uhhh, the small ones prominently stuck to the tops of your cash registers, the medium sized ones stuck to your store windows and the huge one that's stuck across this counter..."
- "Oh, those... uhh, I don't know. Aren't they in the Argos catalogue?"
- "No, the existing iPod range is there, on page 1446. But you guys are advertising a new range. And what's more, all iPods have been removed from your company's website."
- "Have they?"
- "Yes."
- "Uhhh, well it seems that you know more about this than me."
- "So... what about the new range. Do you have it in stock as your posters claim?"
- "Uhhh, I don't know. Probably not. When they arrive, we'll get extra pages to put into the display catalogues. That's when they'll probably be in."
- "Right. So should I just pop in to the store every now and again to check whether you really have them?"
- "Uhhh, yeah."

I though my iPod was acting up, mine usually makes the average lifetime of 18 months or just short and by that time a new one is out and my BestBuy 2-year replacement plan is still in effect. I usually get complimented on how nicely my iPods are kept though, usually just blemishing from not using a plastic case.

Aw, thanks Aqua. I'll try to increase my points tally by poncing around in a deer-stalker... Smile

Sorry about the image quality. It was taken mid-evening on a rainy day, so light levels were low....
