I personally don't have one but my friend does. I notice that the classic Les Paul's are incredibly lighter than the standards.
And fellas, I'm thinking about getting a mexican strat for cheap, is the difference between the American and Mexican strats that noticeable...? |

Sweet! It looks like you're a Fender and maple man. I had a Blues Junior at one time. It was incredibly warm sounding while playing clean.

There is big difference in the quality of craftsmanship, wood, fret work, bridge and tuners, but the standard Strats make for a nice entry to mid-level guitar. You could do a lot worse in that price range. |

Fender is a good value and the MIM's are good place to start. _________________ Mac Book 2.1 Ghz (Penryn) 10.6.7 4Gb DDR2

Yeah, they'll also hold their value a little better than others in that price range. They really are a good place to start. |

I am amused by the way Gibson tries to get the beginning guitarist by selling a guitar without a finish (or very minimal) on the wood. Usually for a couple of hundred dollars more than a Fender. _________________ Mac Book 2.1 Ghz (Penryn) 10.6.7 4Gb DDR2

I think 75% of all Gibson guitars are a ripoff. You're just as well off buying an Epiphone. Well, at least so in the entry-level market. That being said, the Melody Maker is a sweet sounding little guitar. I played one not long ago at a shop. And with that being said, the finish left a lot to be desired. I would never give you four bills for one. |

I looked at a Gibson Les Paul Studio in the Faded Cherry at a local guitar shop last weekend. $850.00 for one, that honestly, I would be wary of getting splinters from the neck. I have been told that a lot of what they charge is because they are based in Nashville, Tenn. Music City and all of that. But, poorly finished wood is just that; poorly finished wood. It doesn't matter what city it is from. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I still would like to have a good 335. Or at least, I think I would. Considering what I have seen of their quality, it might not be possible to find a good one and I just can't justify an entry price of $2000.00 with quality that is hit or miss. _________________ Mac Book 2.1 Ghz (Penryn) 10.6.7 4Gb DDR2

Just get an Epiphone Dot.
Never played one, but I'll show you a 335-based Gibson that I think is totally hot looking.

Bobaloo
Got the Dano, but I need to sent it back. They actually forgot to cut out the vinyl for the jack. It's hard telling what was under there, but I wasn't going to cut it out. They also forgot to install the chrome piece. So Musician's Friend is going to send me a replacment. Other than that, the guitar is pretty sweet. A little small, but sweet. I'll take some pictures when I can.
Edit: Oh yeah, the vinyl banding and pickguard are way more yellowed in person. It gives it a really nice vintage look. |

Got the replacement today. It's looking and sounding nice.
Had to polish her up though. The finish was really rough. Three coats of Fender wax/polish and it's as smooth as a baby's bottom. |
