Looks like it won't hit the shelves for another couple of years at least.
As regards Apple taking it up ? They'll take it up eventually, if only because the greater part of the PC world will be using it. But I must say, Jobs & Co, are still a bit pissed at having so right royally screwed the chance of making Firewire, the universal standard.Their own fault really.
Instead of charging computer & motherboard manufacturers, a royalty; they should just have given it a way, for the first couple of years. Then when they we're ultimately hooked...reel them in...
| Wiki wrote: | | However, the royalty which Apple Inc. and other patent holders initially demanded from users of FireWire (US$0.25 per end-user system) and the more expensive hardware needed to implement it (US$1–$2), both of which have since been dropped, have prevented FireWire from displacing USB in low-end mass-market computer peripherals, where product cost is a major constraint. |

Interestingly, the new Firewire is meant to compete directly with USB 3.
There is talk on that page of Firewire delivering rates of "6.4 Gbit/s, use of single-mode fiber.." So we might find Apple computers using both.

PS : Did you look at the posts in your link...Hackers...?
So nice to read that the olde FIREWIRE Vs USB battle still rages on....
Like otherwise nice folk, arguing over who really won the Civil War... _________________ Of the four X systems in the world.

Has anyone stopped to think about this, the two new connections won't be useful for consumers since flasah drives already get bottlenecked by the flash chip and external HDD's don't even need those kinds of speed (even a 10k rpm can't reach the 1.5Gbps rate of SATA I). _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

I'm more excited about the continuous transfer speeds than the "max" transfer speeds.
Also, with newer, lightweight OS's, SSD progress etc. You shouldn't stifle advancements, at some point it will be relevant. _________________ Automotive Digital Marketing

I'm not against it, I just don't want to see companies go price jack crazy and make PCIe (see not against advancement) cards that you must have and motherboard makers like Intel are especially bad about loading their boards with useless stuff. _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."
