Are any of these drives actually aluminum or are they all "aluminum coloured plastic". yuck.

I personally have a aluminum LaCie mini. I think it is fantastic. I bought the 1st gen model without the fan. No heat issues.

It doesn't look like LaCie sells them any longer.

there are 3 @ $110ea with 320GB drives in clearance

Do you know what's inside for a HD? Could it be swapped for a bigger one?

Looking at the photos in the 123MM review, opening one up seems perfectly possible...

They are very simple to open. Just 4 screws located under the rubber feet on the bottom.

I think mine came with a Seagate. It's very quiet. Whatever drives they use are good ones.

BTW, I believe the clearance drives are the passive models (no fan) yet they have a built in firewire/USB hub.

I have a mini-stack V2 that I installed my own drive into. I'll probably replace the HD with a bigger and faster one eventually. I've had this mini-stack replaced under warranty already because something happened with the power connector. It would no longer power on. The same thing happened to my V1 but I thought that was caused by a spike because it stopped working after a power failure. once the 2nd one failed, I called them and had it replaced. I don't think I'd buy another mini-stack, but I'd look at other brands.
