I actually "borrowed" a 50ft. Cat6 cable and plugged the thing in - same thing. Slow City! What a bummer! I'm thinking it must be my connection, which is DSL (300K download, I think?) and not Cable. I think that when I had a Cable Modem in the past, the download speed was a bit faster compared to DSL.
This sucks, though, because I LOVE the music streaming into the Living Room, and a couple of the other features, but it seriously takes almost 10 minutes to play a SD trailer. That just kind of makes the whole thing a big buzz kill.....especially when I'm trying to "sell" the idea of having it at all! |
That does stink. All the more reason to sell your wife on getting a cable connection! The ATV is really awesome with a fast internet connection. I've even already installed ATV Flash and have a 750GB external drive connected plus I am using the RemoteApp on my iPhone to control it as well as surf the web on my ATV! With that little bit of software installed and a fast internet connection it truely shines. My wife even wants her own iPhone now so she can control the ATV and surf the web on our 42" Plasma. . . .

You definitely need to go for a faster connection, as HM said the AppleTV is awesome with a fast connection. I wish I could convince my wife to let me get the turbo upgrade from Road Runner. In my area its $10 more a month and essentially doubles the speed both up and down. But she feels that its fast enough as is |

It's interesting, because I had a cable modem prior to this and when I switched to DSL, I didn't really FEEL it. It still seems roughly the same, as far as download speed, when surfing.
For grins, I actually "rented" an SD movie tonight - thinking maybe I'm CRAZY and it will magically download quickly. Well, I'm CRAZY alright - for renting it! It kicked off the download and said it had 2-3 hours left before it would play. I checked it about 1.5 hours later and it was up to a whopping 14%. Yikes.
Well, I don't really want to ditch my DSL because it's only $16/month - so I guess for now I'll enjoy both the Audio and YouTube functions of ATV. As far as movie rentals, etc...it's unusable with my connection. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to it. Ohh well...I still digg everything Apple puts out. Cool products.
So.....who wants to buy an ATV? <hee hee>
(Thanks for keeping the thread going...by the way.) |

Can you give a small summary as to how atv flash worked out for you. The drawback I have about buying the ATV is the limitation of media content it plays. I have a mini now and with perin installed it plays everything via frontrow. Will the ATV play everything like the mini with the atv flash installed and how difficult was atv flash to install. |
