iPhone 3G Review and Photo Roundup
Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Some early reviews are starting to come in for the new iPhone 3G. They are from Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, Edward Baig of USA Today, and David Pogue of the New York Times. You know, the guys that always get the cool new Apple gear before anyone else. Overall, they were impressed with the sound quality, connection speeds and new design. They also point out negatives like a decrease in battery life with 3G and GPS, and higher service costs. I also posted some links to the best iPhone 3G photos around. You can find those at the bottom of the page.

Great a new iphone a new set of issues.
1. the iphone without plan will cost you 599.99 from at&t when the cheaper model only cost 199.99 why the price hike
2. 39.99 a month for data access charges
3. you have to sign a 2 year contract
4. unlimited service is 100.00 per month
5. 450 minutes is 39.99 a month
By the time you do just basic service you are looking at well over 300.00 for the phone thanks but no thanks.
AT&T's slogun should be AT&T we could make are phone service cheaper but we are to stupid to do so. |

I'm just looking forward to the iTunes remote application. I see no reason to upgrade phones or plans at this time. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

As much as I like the technology the iPhone has to offer, I HATE cell phone plans/contracts. I sure wish the iPhone was independent of contracts/telcos. The news has been all about the contracts rather than the technology. I'm sure we'll get more into the technology as the product gets into people hands.
AT&T, Rogers, O2... this stuff is driving me nuts.
It's nice to see some news about the technology. I love discussing technology not contracts.

I bet AT&T is happy about the Rogers mess. It makes them look less slimy.
I agree with what you are saying though. I love this new tech, but the cell phone companies and contracts ruin it. They are just horrible to deal with on all levels. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

| I changed my mind about getting the black model. All of the pictures that I've seen make it look like a greasy fingerprint magnet. I'm going with the white model now. I still wish that it had a white front, but the back should always stay clean looking. See you in line! |

I thought it was better you could buy online and activate through iTunes. I don't have an AT&T store or Apple store close. So there's really no way for me to get one without traveling. That's a shame. I had planned on buying one as soon as they came out. _________________ 1.66GHz, 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz Mac minis

Walt can come off as a fanboy at times, but I thought this review was rather fair and balanced. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

The data access charge is only $30, yes it is more than the current iPhone rate but this includes the 3G access. Look at their other data connection prices, this is the lowest for unlimited.
$100 is the going rate for unlimited service from all of the different carriers.
I am definitely not siding with AT&T here, because we do get over charged for service, but every company overcharges. I'm really glad I don't live in Canada, I feel for the people that have been waiting to get the iPhone up there. |

The data plan (at least here in the US) is competitive when you compare it to plans for the BlackBerry and Treo. I just think people get frustrated with the providers when they start nickel-and-diming you for everything else. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Totally agree, like not including any text with the plans.
Things look better for Canada, right after I posted my comment Rogers announced a special $30 for 6GB plan. |

Yeah, it looks like Rogers caved in some. I bet the boys up in Canada are happy. It looks like their petition actually worked. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

I have one major problem with the data plan increase. Look at this map. Blue denotes where 3G service is available from AT&T.
Do you see much blue in Arkansas, or for that matter the rest of the United States? It's great if you live in a big city, but we're paying more for the same old EDGE. Am I missing something? |
