Found this on my iGoogle, looks interesting and seems that prices may have dropped by around $100 each model (roughly speculated by me though according to last paragraph and exchange rates).

What are you talking about?
Prices have been posted on Apples website for a couple of weeks now, "Twice as Fast, 1/2 the Price."
8g $199
16g $299 _________________ --Marcus

Not entirely true since those are the price after you sign a contract, this article talks about the prices without contract.
This also makes me wonder if the price of $199 is what you pay or after rebate? _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

^ well for someone (me) that has had Southwestern Bell Wireless -> Cingular Wireless -> AT&T Wireless for right at 10 years it makes no difference to me...
If I recall, when I activated my EDGE iPhone, its a box you check on iTunes during setup that states your signing a 2 year contract. There was no way to move forward without checking the box. Maybe they'll change this, but I doubt it... _________________ --Marcus

Unless Apple has changed the rules, this release of the iPhone CAN NOT be purchased out right. It must be activated before it leaves the store.
AFAIK, No more activating via iTunes, in the comfort of your own home.
Regardless, you are correct. You'll be "signing" a new/extended contract for 2 more years.

Huh? I shouda read the article before posting, I know. If I may, what in the hell does the price in France have to do with it here? I've read the pricing of many of the other countries, doesn't have a bit of effect on me, here. _________________ Automotive Digital Marketing

Me too, then I'll take the receipt to State Farm to get reimbursed! I hope its not "2 more years." I hope it cancels what you have and starts you over at 2 years...
As far as Apple activating them in the store, wow, I didn't think Apple would do that, thats going to be a mell of a hess! _________________ --Marcus

I've read somewhere that in the UK you can sign up prior to the 11 July launch and pre activate. Then just turn up on the 11th to pick up your phone. _________________ Phil

Isn't this what most US cellular carriers do now?
On another note, I keep hearing from folks (my co-workers) about how they are going to get the phone at the subsidized price and then weasel out of the contract. I wonder how that is going to work out for them? Seems like smarter than the average bear syndrome to me. |

I don't know, but that seems like a lot of hassle. Sometimes you just have to hold your nose and go along with the flow. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

I'm confused at your question. I would assume US cellular stores activate phones in store, most cellular stores do. However, currently, Apple Stores just sell the iPhone, and the customer activates it using iTunes (took me maybe 15 minutes). If you have to activate the phone in the Apple Store, it's might turn the Apple Store into one of those places I hate; you know, where you have to take a number. I enjoy going to the apple store for other products than the iPhone, but if you have to activate the phone in the Apple Store, then it's going to tie up their employees...
I'm thinking this rumor is not true, and hoping it is not... _________________ --Marcus

^ great, I wonder how this will effect those of us that just "signed" a 2 year contract for the previous version iPhone...
I had been OUT of contract for at least a year when I bought my EDGE iPhone. Had I known this was the future, I would have insured it for more than purchase price... _________________ --Marcus

It's true, the phones must be activated in-store. And FWIW the Emeryville, CA Apple store is already too crazy like this. I might not get the cool apple shopping bag, but I'm going to buy the phone at an AT&T phone store, not the Apple store. _________________ MacMini 2GHz C2D 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD| Panasonic TH-37PX60U | iPhone 3G 16GB
