I don't know how many of you knew this, but I was interning down in New Orleans over the summer. I'll say right now, that I'm fine, I lost nothing, and I'm now out at school. I just wanted to post this because I haven't posted much this last week between finishing work for my internship before I left, packing for the drive back to Minnesota, and then organizing all of that for my flight out to Providence. Now that the hurricane has left its mark in the city that I called home all summer, there's little else I can do besides listen to the news about it. I was lucky enough to have packed up all of my belongings to take home with me before we even knew the hurricane was going to hit. This post is for all of the people who know someone who they haven't heard from or who lost everything, or just those that can't return to Slidell or other areas where their house is probably alright, though I hope that is none of you here.

I'm making this a post instead of an edit to return this thread to the top of the stack for the following reason. These are sites that are accepting donations towards helping the hurricane victims.

Catholic Charities USA (sidenote: my mom is the webmaster, just thought I'd throw that out there)
American Red Cross
United Way

Thank god you made it out. You are indeed fortunateto a have made it and I can only imagine what it is like for you.

The hospital that I work at is coordinating a volunteer effort to send medical and non-medical personel down. Each person that volunteers will be rotated to the affected area for a 2 week period. Needless to say that I have signed up to donate my time and services to go help. I have no idea when I will be going but I am told that this will be ongoing for several months. I will let you know when I am called upon to help.

blueshead, I'm glad you're alright!

RE: your apt being looted. Did they take just food/stuff needed to survive, or did they take all of your other stuff too?

LouieMacGoo, hats off to you for donating your time like that. I wish the company I worked for would allow us to do that.

Before you make a personal donation. Try to find a company that's matching donations.
