Mozilla today released Firefox 3, a major update to its popular open source Web browser. According to the company, Firefox 3 is the culmination of three years of efforts from thousands of developers, security experts, localization and support communities, and testers from around the globe. Available today in approximately 50 languages, Firefox 3 is two to three times faster than its predecessor and offers more than 15,000 improvements, including the revolutionary smart location bar, malware protection, and extensive under the hood work to improve the speed and performance of the browser.

I can't wait to try this. Safari has been eating up memory for some reason lately for me. I've been back and forth so many times between the two over the years.

I always heard that it was the other way around, but I'm noticing the same thing. I can't wait to give the final release a try. It looks like there site is getting hammered, so it might be a while though.

Edit: I just started to download! Very Happy

Firefox 3 seems to be doing better for me with memory. Especially with multiple windows or tabs open. It's running at least 10-20MB less at any given moment. The overall speed seems about the same. I'm pretty impressed.

Seems faster than the previous version and on a par with Safari.

Anyone else having trouble with jerky scrolling? I have major stuttering on complex websites or websites with a lot of images. Take the Engadget homepage for example. I wonder if this is an issue with our integrated graphics? I have the same thing happening on a new MacBook.

I think Safari feels a little faster, but I'm heading back to the Fox, Fox. Wink

This is just an awesome release. I especially like the new bookmark and zoom features. I even like the new default theme, even though most people seem to hate it.

I haven't noticed any issues with scrolling. Try turning on smooth scrolling in the Firefox Preferences under Advanced > General. That might help you some.

I did my part to help break the download record. I installed 3.0 on four boxes yesterday. And it's running like a charm on all of them. Smile

Yep. I am. I tried "smooth scrolling" it was "smoother" but, really weird. I'd rather deal with the jerky scrolling.

Plus, I don't think it's as fast as Safari. I'll try it for a while longer to be sure. My first impression isn't great though.

When I said the overall speed seems about the same, I meant Safari 3.1.1 vs. Firefox 3.0. I with you on it being faster than the previous version. It smokes Firefox 2.x.

"And while 8.3 million might well become an audited record, Adobe blogger and evangelist Ryan Stewart pointed out that Adobe gets 8 million installations of the Flash plug-in on an average day."

That's a lot of Flashing! I wonder how may Apple does on your average day with iTunes?

I think smooth scrolling slows things down too much.

Oh well, I'm sticking with Safari. I was about to switch to the nightly WebKit builds anyways. I can't wait to get a taste of SquirrelFish. I would also like to witness a perfect score on the Acid3 test just once.
