It won't shut down!

So when I try to shut it down, it closes all applications then goes to that blue screen with just an animation...forever. I even left it doing that all day and when I returned, there was no change. Any help?

I imagine you already found that you can press and hold the power button to force it to power off.

I'd suggest you use the Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder to repair permissions on your hard drive. It tends to fix many odd problems.

On a side note, if I just hold the power button down, is that bad for the computer to shut it down like that?

It's best to avoid doing that when you have another option available, but if a computer hangs you will simply have no choice.

OS X uses a journaled file system which reduces the risk of doing serious harm to your file system when you do power off abruptly.

Even if the user never did force a power down this way, the designers have to take into account the fact that power losses happen at random in the real world.

So, no harm done, but it is better to shut down normally when everything is behaving well.
