Monday, June 9, 2008
Posted by: Brian
Apple today introduced MobileMe, a new Internet service that delivers push email, push contacts and push calendars from the MobileMe service in the "cloud" to native applications on iPhone, iPod touch, Macs and PCs. MobileMe also provides a suite of elegant, ad-free web applications that deliver a desktop-like experience through any modern browser. MobileMe applications include Mail, Contacts and Calendar, as well as Gallery for viewing and sharing photos and iDisk for storing and exchanging documents online.

opposite for me. I already have .mac but I think .mac and mobileme are over priced. It is good especially the syncing, but I can achieve most of everything else with my domain hosting. _________________ Phil

| I'll probably pick it up, but I was hoping for lower prices than .Mac. |

The more I think about it the more I think it is a bit over priced, I would definitely pick it up if it was on offer. Having said that if it allows me to sync all my uni work from my MacBook and access the files on my iPhone I'm sold. _________________ MacBook 1.83Ghz C2D, 2GB Ram, 160GB 7200rpm HDD, OS X 10.6.5

| It looks nice but I'll have to think on this a little longer before I jump in with my $99 to see if this is something I truly want. At any rate, I went ahead and started a .mac trial so when it's transferred over to .me, I will be able to use the .mac e-mail address. |

| This is definite buy for me. With two home macs, the new iphone next month and the computer I use at my job this will make things so much easier. Heck, just being able to look at my calender when I am on my GF's comp makes this worth the price of admission. Does anyone know if they have kept the function from .mac that lets you sync your bookmarks? |

I can't see any reason they would remove existing functionality from the service. _________________ MacBook 1.83Ghz C2D, 2GB Ram, 160GB 7200rpm HDD, OS X 10.6.5

I was never a big fan of .Mac, but this is a no brainer if you have an iPhone. It's also going to come in handy with those darn Windows machines at work. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I have planned to finally subscribing to .Mac this summer and am encouraged by the new features. However, I do NOT like the "@me.com" address. Obnoxious, I think.
On the "Migrating" page of the site it currently says . . .
"Your email address at me.com or mac.com.
As a MobileMe subscriber, you can still use your email address at mac.com. You’ll also get a new address at me.com with your user name. Use whichever one you like."
Does this mean that NEW subscribers like me will have the option to be "@mac.com" or are we stuck with "@me.com" since we never had service before? |

I think the same I would hate to have a @me.com address I would definitely prefer to use @mac.com

you could do as kez has mentioned above and get a .mac 60 day trial now then migrate the .mac account over to mobile me and keep the .mac e-mail address. _________________ Phil

I would be embarrassed of a @me.com email account.

Thanks Cypher, I would love to do just that but the option seems to be off the table.
I just started looking at the Apple site, and it seems there is no trace of .Mac to get to. Do we even have the option to register for an account right now at all? |

Wait! I take that back - you CAN register for a trial .Mac account still. Brilliant!
So, now, does anyone have experience with having a trial account and then moving it to a "full" paid account?
I ask because I just want to ensure that (the whole introduction of MobileMe aside) the username you create as a trial carries with you in 3 months when you pay for a full year of a paid account. Make sense?
In other words, have I locked in this trial username, or am I only really safe if I buy a year's worth of service right now for $99? |

I bought my .Mac at the same time as I bought the iMac. However I still took out the 60 day trail and then entered my bought serial at the end of the 60 days.
The .Mac retail was 12 months for £68 (I think) I got 14 months by running the trial first.
BTW you could do it this way to save $30 and get 14 months for $69
register for the 60 trail, but buy this now .Mac Retail from Amazon $69 You will then be able to enter the serial number from the box to get the 12 months. _________________ Phil
