Excellent review Greg! I'm unhappy with the noise and heat my miniMate produces. I'm thinking about replacing it with the miniStack next week. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I'm very happy with miniStack thus far. The only real noise comes from my drive when its accessing but its not excessive. Seemed like the unit was running pretty warm last night when I first set it up but with regular use this afternoon its not much warmer than the Mini. I'm not too concerned. I think the real test is when I use it for DVD burning. Then we'll see how warm it gets. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

The miniMate doesn't have a fan, but is very noisy. How often do you find the M9's fan coming on? When it comes on how noisy is it? I'll understand if you need a few more days of testing before commenting. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I don't really notice the fan coming on much at all tonight although I'm currently booted off of my internal drive. I have run some applications off of the external just for fun and I might have noticed the fan once every few minutes for brief periods of time. Last night when I was performing the SuperDuper copy it seemed like the fan was running continuously. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

If you want to stress test it download an HD-quality Quicktime video from Apple's website and play that looped on the external. I think that should do perfectly for seeing how the heat is when you're constantly running the drive. _________________ Computer Engineer

You can buy it at OtherWorldComputing (OWC) here.

It's $99.95 for the empty enclosure where you have to provide the 3.5" hard drive. It works up from there for the different sized; see the link for prices. _________________ Computer Engineer

I transferred 32 GB between my Minimate and an external PC HDD on an XP machine. The Mac Mini was connected via wired ethernet and the PC was via 802.11b. The transfer was SLOW, about 15 hours.
The minimate got hot (250GB seagate HD), but I could still touch it, fan wasn't too loud, not any more so than my HD Tivo fan.
Now it runs much cooler. As I said earlier, I'm happy w/ it. |

Are Firewire ports powered?
I need to hook up the EyeTV 200 to this enclosure without resorting a power adapter for it.
Thanks,

Macpower sent me a short animated video showing a hard drive being installed into the M9-DX. The video applies to other enclosures such as the NewerTech miniStack.
You can view the video here.

| Is the ministack v2 a rebadged M9-DX + extra side ports? I've been reading the Newertechnologies' ministack v2 website and they offer a unit with a 750GB Seagate Baraccuda 7200.10 IDE drive even if Macpower says we cant use a any Seagate drive bigger than 160GB. I made some comparison with my 320GB Seagate Baraccuda 7200.10 IDE drive with older & smaller capacity Seagate models and they're as long. Other brands like Fujitsu, Samsung and Maxtor are shorter. So anyone having problems using a Seagate inside a M9 or ministack? |
