Apple Releases Safari 3.1
Tuesday, March 18, 2008
Posted by: Charles

Apple today announced the release of Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows. According to the company, Safari 3.1 loads web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2. Safari also runs JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers, and is the first browser to support the latest innovative web standards needed to deliver the next generation of highly interactive Web 2.0 experiences.

"Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows is blazingly fast, easy to use and features an elegant user interface," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "And best of all, Safari supports the latest audio, video and animation standards for an industry-leading Web 2.0 experience."

Safari 3.1 is the first browser to support the new video and audio tags in HTML 5 and the first to support CSS Animations. It also supports CSS Web Fonts, giving designers limitless choices of fonts to create stunning new web sites. A complete list of changes is available here.

To update to Safari 3.1, use Software Update or a standalone installer.

I haven't noticed a difference in speed. But I like that you can double click and open a new tab now. Very Happy

I haven't either. Safari continues to stumble when loading many sites, and this is on every mac I own. I wish I could solve this problem because it is my browser of choice. When it doesn't stumble, it does load incredibly fast.

Perhaps it's just my perception (Apple have brainwashed me!!! Very Happy ) but I've found that after the update, websites are loading instantaneously. I don't think it was this quick before I updated...

That could be from the restart. Give it a week. Wink

I don't notice a difference in speed either way.

I don't use Spaces that much. Was it opening in a new Space? Confused

I also didn't notice a huge difference between 3.0 and 3.1.

After surfing my normal sites and building some cache, on my Windows machine here at work, 3.1 is VERY quick. I have a extremely low end PC at work with 256MB Ram, and Safari is running great!

On my Macs, 3.1 is about the same. On my Windows machine (Vista at home, XP at work) it is much faster than Firefox or IE and a pleasure to use.

I agree with the last two comments. Safari 3.1 seems to be running much better on Windows. I also noticed that it took a long time to install. Mine was working and writing pretty hard there. Did you guys notice that?

I'd love to use Safari more but I can't get it to open more than one tab as my "Home" like I can do in Firefox. To me Safari does seem faster than Firefox so that's why I'd like to use it more, if I could just get past the tab issue.

Have you guys noticed the new menu option? now you can select if you want a "Develop" Menu to show up on the menu bar, it lets you change the User Agent to Firefox, Opera, IE6 or 7, you also have the manual setting option and thats useful when you run into sites that are IE7 only or another specific browser Smile give it a try

I would also like to see them have a thumbnail or Cover Flow view of your open tabs.

Having used 3.1 for a few days, it only seems to stumble infrequently now. I'm going to make it my main browser again for awhile and see what happens.
