| I have a mac mini that sits about 10 feet away from my TV. I go love utube and would love to be able to control from my couch. Can anyone help me make up my mind. |

I currently have 3 AppleTVs and a Mini which is hooked up to a new 32" LCD HDTV. Now that the 2.0 software has come out for the AppleTV I think I am going to move the Mini back to the office where it will still be the media server, and I will get AppleTV #4 to go with the LCD TV. |

| I own both of them. Personally, I would stick with the Mac mini. There is so much more that you can do with it. You have more file formats with Video_TS, your entire computer desktop and Front Row 2.0, and the ability to run EyeTV. The Apple TV YouTube interface is slick, but it's probably faster to use Safari with a keyboard and mouse to navigate around with. Plus, I still have a feeling that everything you see on the Apple TV will eventually come to Front Row. I'm talking Flickr, YouTube, HD rentals... |

I have both also but the AppleTV has replaced the mini in the HT setup. The difference to me is the AppleTV just works out of the box, the mini needs setting up to get the display resolution correct (which I never managed) starting front row etc. So with the exception of using it as a dvd player I find I can do everything I need to on the AppleTV.
The AppleTV is way more wife friendly too. And anyone who has a technically challenged wife will agree that is a good thing!
I think the deciding factor is - do you want a computer attached to your HT (with the added complications and flexibility) or do you want a media extender attached to your HT. |
