it will depend on how extensive your music files are as to whether you need the base station.

I have a 750GB drive connected to the base station. It contains only music files that are configured to run from a specific computer that acts as a music server for my other computers. I chose the base station to replace a cheaper router based on comments at this site: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/ There have been other testimonies that point to the strength of the signal that will enable a more secure connection to my server, which is placed roughly 50 feet from the base station at the other end of the house.

You can use the Express modules with any Wi-Fi router, of course, so if you are not taking the same tact that I am, and can limit your music selections to those on your server's local drive, you really don't need the base station.

I'm not realy that technical ....

I guess by best option is getting a usb 400gig external drive connected to my mini and fill it up with music than stream it to the airport express to my speakers...

Only problem is that i can not access it from my laptop.. i can live with that Wink

I have an Airport Express and can't live without it. I love being able to stream music to my bedroom from my computer.

I was looking at getting an extreme last week but I settled for a refurbished express (#2 for me) after I was able to pick up a second set of decent speakers on the cheap. I'm going to be streaming music over the entire apartment. LOL

Apple should combine the two products. But I guess that would be too much like right. Rolling Eyes
