I'm a newbie to Mac OS X, only got my mini last week and still loving it. I have a question for you which I can't find a answer to atm.
In Outlook I used to have it set so it never marked a message as read until I double clicked to open the mail or right clicked and marked as read. If you looked at it in the preview pane it stayed as unread.
Is there a way in mail that I can do this so only mark mail as read if I acutally open the mail or right click and mark as read?

| You can go to Mail > View > Customize Toolbar and drag Unread/Read buttons to the toolbar. |

Thanks but doesn't actually solve my problem. I wanted it to not mark the message as read until I mark it myself. I want to stop it marking an item as read as soon as it opens in the preview pane. |

This happens because you have the preview pane opened on the bottom. Mail will automtically mark it as read as soon as you click on any message since it is showing the content on the preview pane. If you collapse the pane, it will no longer mark it as read as you highlight any message.

Ok thanks. I guessed this was why it was doing it but I in Outlook I could turn it of so even though it displayed in the preview pane it didn't mark it as read until i marked it as read.
Guess I'll scrap using mail and find something else like Thunderbird to manage my email.
