So I was in the market for the cheapest MacBook possible to replace my Mini, because my girlfriend wanted more portability. Performance wasn't a big deal because she doesn't do too much with the machine. My only requirements for the machine is that it was still under Apple's 1 year warranty, so I had the option of buying Applecare at some point. I checked out eBay and Craigslist, and the market prices were a bit high for in-warranty machines, and still too high for out of warranty machines. I decided finding one of Apple's refurb MacBooks was what I wanted to do.
Checking Apple's refurb store found a lot of the current generation models for $949, but never anything cheaper. I know they offer older Core 2 Duo and even Core Duo models for even less, but they seem like they're never in stock.
I found this site that produces RSS feeds for Apple refurb listings. I made an RSS feed for the laptop section filtering only for "core duo" so I'd find the cheapest models. I then passed that RSS feed to Yahoo Blog Alerts which can send an SMS whenever an RSS feed is updated (Pingie is another option, but I couldn't get it to work for the life of me).
Sure enough, this morning at 3:15AM, Apple updated their refurb site, I got a text message. I woke up, grabbed my MBP, and placed an order for a $749 1.83GHz Core Duo MacBook (yes, yet another 1.83GHz Core Duo for me). After tax and free shipping, $820. Not bad for a refurb with a full warranty from Apple. I think this can be easily adapted for Mini refurbs (or any Apple refurbs), so good luck to any of you refurb hunters! _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external
