OK, I got my mini today. It has OSX 10.4.2 on it. I need to install X11 so I can run Gimp. I have found that it is on the install disc but when I put the disc in, select "install" then restart, it comes up telling me that it is going to install OSX either in a separate directory or redo the existing installation. I need to know how to install additional components of the OS that weren't installed initially without being destructive to the exising OS.

Thanks
Todd

Okay, here's what I did. I don't really need X11, but I figured I'd install it to help you out and also because I wanted to play with some apps that need it. The ones that need a bunch of extra stuff are normally the coolest.

First, I read that Tiger automagically installs X11 when it's installed, but I just checked Apple's page, and they don't say that, and it wasn't the case for me.

First, if you have Tiger, just Spotlight X11.
If you don't have Tiger: You'll need to enable the viewing of all files
In Terminal:
# defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
# killall Finder
Find the package installer called X11User.pkg
If you had to use the finder it should be on the CD under System->Installation->Packages->X11User.pkg
If you had to show all finders to get here, you can disable it by typing these commands into Terminal
# defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAll Files FALSE
# killall Finder
Install this
You're done
X11 is installed to Applications->Utilities

Comes with 3 apps: xterm, xman, and xlogo

Edited: Added instructions for Panther. If you wish to run Panther on 10.2 or below, you need to manually install Xfree86 and XDarwin. Information can be found at the XonX project at SourceForge.

Well I tried that and it didn't work. It tells me:

"You cannot install X11 on this volume. Newer Software already exists on your computer."

The only other hit that spotlight finds is x11sdk.pkg. Any other suggestions?
Apparently it isn't already installed because when I try to install Gimp it tells me that X11 isn't running. Is it possible that it is installed but just inactive? Like a service in Windows that isn't started? Excuse the noob question...

Thanks
Todd

So X11 isn't under your Applications folder then and you installed using X11User.pkg?

Pop in the Tiger install disc and when the finder window opens, scoll down to a file called Optional Installs.mpkg. (it's right under the Xcode folder) Click through the first screens, and select the destination drive. Click the arrow next to Applications and you will see the option to install X11.

Good luck
