LaCie Unveils External Drive by Neil Poulton

LaCie today announced the "Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton", a new external USB 2.0 hard drive available in capacities of 320GB, 500GB, 750GB and 1TB. According to the company, "The user-friendly drive adds sophisticated style to your desktop yet its presence is quiet and unobtrusive. It has a unique distinguishing feature - a cool, blue LED strip on its underside that creates an ambient glow. Its subtle, all-black design blends perfectly into dark home entertainment setups and workstations. Very small for its vast capacity, this lightweight, compact drive has a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. The smartly engineered design allows for heat dissipation and near-silent, fanless operation." Prices start at $119 for the 320GB model and go to $399 for the 1TB model. All models will begin shipping in early January.

i thought that kinda weak too, but it looks like they're keeping it minimal for htpc setups so i dunno...looks slick though!

I like the design, fanless is really nice, but overall I think I still prefer the Porsche design ones because you can get them with Firewire and/or USB and they're cheaper. The only drawback on the Porsche ones is that some of the 500GB models are not fanless, and it's awfully difficult to tell which ones are and which ones aren't.

| I kind of dig the looks, but are we talking aluminum or plastic here? I don't see anything mentioned. I really want something that is aluminum. It's a shame that it doesn't have firewire, but I need something for TM that is nice and quiet. This could fit the bill. |

I checked the specifications, the datasheet and the manual and there's no mention of its emitted noise levels in decibels anywhere. Handing over money in the hope that a drive is quiet is a crap shoot if these guys don't print the numbers.

I have 2 external 2.5" HD's and get about 25-30MB/sec over USB 2.0 on my C2D mini.
Just a couple years ago I hardly ever saw a USB chipset that could do over 10-12MB/sec so I would say the technology has come a long way. |

The glowing light coming forward looks super cool. 
I'm not a fan of glossy black gear though. Glossy black usually means it will be a grimy fingerprint magnet. |

that it has!! No argument there. I have tried both USB 2.0 and FW 400, FW blows USB away!! especially at sustained transfer rates... I am constantly moving large files (over 2Gb all the time) and needing to stream content to and from those same volumes. USB 2.0 would choke up, my FW 400's no problem....

I agree that FW 400 is certainly better.. I was just pointing out that USB 2.0 is faster than it used to be.
The one external HD I have is from the days when I had a PPC mini. The same drive I get up to 30MB/sec on with my intel mini only got 9-12MB/sec on my PPC mini. Same enclosure, drive and cable.. |

Traditionally, LaCie has never sold bare enclosures. It's a shame, as I really like some of their cases, but I like more choice in my drive brands/capacities/prices.

Me too. I would probably rank them right up there with G-Tech as far as having some of the best quality enclosures. I know that I wouldn't mind having another d2 Quadra enclosure. I have two 3.5" drives just sitting here. |
