Not all the beers! The lager should be chilled but not the ale. Smile

To Aquafire, The amount of money involved is totally irrelevant and not the point of this discussion, just because he gave them his credit/debit card details, it doesn't mean they can take money as and when they feel like it. Apple not giving him advance warning that they will take £1 is as good as stealing. What if I (a total stranger) walked into your house and took £1, would its low value stop you from calling the police, or confronting me and ask that it be returned. If the answer is yes, then you have have very low moral values.

It's not the amount taken or the principle of taking without asking that concerns me. What puzzles me is why Apple would need to pre-authorise at all, when you're pre-paying.

If you were buying something like a night in a hotel where you get the service first (the room) and then give the payment second, I could understand the need to pre-authorise the card. It would give the hotel a deposit against customer damages/thefts and it would verify that the payment card is kosher.

But you're paying up front. Apple get to hang on to their product (a copy of Leopard) while they check your card's validity. There's no risk to them. So why pre-authorise at all?

Yes yes yes James. Point taken. Rolling Eyes

My point...(if you care to read my fine print. was about the original poster, getting all bent out of joint over one lousy £1. I was speaking about keeping things in a proper perspective.

Gawd almighty...Whatever happened to famously British "Stiff Upper Lip" ?

For starters, neither Apple nor anyone else shirtfronted this person.

Your confusing a case of 'stealing' from 'robbery'

Stealing is what is carried out against a person, indirectly.

Robbery is carried out against the person, directly & physically.

There is a big difference to the two actions. Go check your law book.

Other than that..

Mate, if you find a Pound on my premises, you'd be welcome to it.

Arond my joint, we use Aussie $$$$.

So a pommy quid is hardly of any use to me sport.. Wink

Oh and puhleese...don't lecture me about morals...high or low.

I used to be a moderator and admin with two philosophy forums (both covered, morals, ethics & law).

So, I reckon I might know a thing or two about such matters. Cool

See ya.

Thats one of my favourite scenes on HGTTG. Douglas Adams was a genius.

To Aquafire,

I know £1 is nothing, but its the fact that they didn't tell me that they would do this.

The point I am making is that I could of only put £5.95 in my bank account to pay for Leopard and find out that my bank has charged me because Apple have taken outa further £1 without my knowing. Maybe banks where you are are different but here in Scotland they charge you £30 for money coming out thats not there even if its £1.

Apple should mention the £1 charge (even though its crumbs) to potential buyers on their website. BUT they don'tSad

EDIT:Ijust looked into my bank account and Apple have paid the "crumby" £1 back into my bank account. Smile

O.k. I am guessing that's a show/movie from across the pond. What is it?

EDIT: I googled it! Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy!

Aquafire, you can play it down all you want but the fact is you just came across as someone who doesn't care if money is taken without consent. But then I don't expect any different seeing as your probable the descendent of some convict we shipped out years ago.

Could it have been only to confirm it is a valid card since the initial amount was credited back? Here when you set up money transfers, the institution will transfer a small amount into your account to confirm that transfers can be made, once received, you confirm with them the amounts that were transferred.

Here we go. Another needlessly poisonous attack from JamesE toward anyone who happens to disagree with him. Rolling Eyes

Impressive James.. Rolling Eyes

Two logical fallacies in one paragraph... Laughing

One is a 'non sequitor' while the other is a 'deductive fallacy'

Can you tell which is which..?

Cheers

After Apple screwed up my up to date order like 5 times, they called my local AS to arrange a free copy to be given to me. When I went into the store to pick up they gave me a reciept. On it was the charge of 129.99 then the next line there was a credit code and a credit of 128.54, leaving a balance due of 1.45. pretty close to what showed up on the OP statement. I wonder if some dummy just entered the transaction wrong.
