Apple Updates MacBook and MacBook Pro

Apple today quietly updated the MacBook and MacBook Pro. The MacBook has been moved to the Santa Rosa platform and Intel GMA X3100 graphics. The rest of the specs are pretty much the same as the previous models. The 2.4GHz MacBook Pro now has the option to upgrade to a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo processor for $250. Apple also added a 250GB hard drive BTO option for all MacBook Pro models.

The 2.0 GHz, 13-inch white MacBook, for a suggested retail price of $1,099 (US), includes:
- 13.3-inch glossy widescreen 1280 x 800 display;
- 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor;
- 800 MHz front-side bus;
- 1GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB;
- 80GB Serial ATA hard drive running at 5400 rpm, with Sudden Motion Sensor;
- a slot-load Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) optical drive;
- Intel GMA X3100 graphics;
- Mini-DVI out (adapters for DVI, VGA and Composite/S-Video sold separately);
- built-in iSight video camera;
- Gigabit Ethernet port;
- built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR;
- two USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire 400 port;
- one audio line in and one audio line out port, each supporting both optical digital and analog;
- Scrolling TrackPad;
- the infrared Apple Remote; and
- 60 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter.

I know Apple usually doesn't update too many models at once, but how long do you think we'll have to wait for the Mac mini to get the same upgrades in CPU and GPU? I wouldn't mind the small difference in GHz, but the 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo has twice has much L2 cache as the 1.83GHz. And the GMA X3100 should be better than the GMA950 (all I want is the ability to play StarCraft 2).

Shouldn't be long though, I've just received my Mac mini Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz with GMA950 yesterday... in a week, maybe?

Now we know what the future is for the Mac mini when it comes to video. I really thought there was a chance that Apple would bump things up to something like the dedicated 128MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS in the MacBook and Mac mini. I'm also disappointed that Apple continues to bottleneck the shared video memory. I could be wrong, but I think the X3100 is running at 384MB in most PCs.

Lame. And there still only 1,000 dollers. When is apple going to release laptops at 800.00 like everyone else or 400.00 like hp and all these other companys are doing.

I was really hoping for better MacBook Pro updates. I just can't take that glossy screen on the MacBook. I had one and sold it. At the least, they should have increased the 120GB HDD in the entry-level MacBook Pro. I think they should be 160GB+ across the board for the prices they are asking.

I had a feeling that it would just be a small refresh. My guess is they are holding off the big stuff for Macworld. Maybe a 15" model, aluminum cases and LED screens.

$1100 for a laptop.

Why so high? Is it the build quality?

Or simply cause its apple?

I ask because with all of the like 700-800 laptops going around these days, with larger screen and even better specs at times - why cant apple make a more affordable laptop...

I'm glad you can now custom order MacBooks and MacBook Pros with 250GB drives Still too pricey, but at least it's an option.

I bought my new 2.2 ghz black Macbook this morning at 10:05 from the Lenox Apple Store here in Atlanta.

So far no issues that I didn't already know about with running leopard on my Mini.

I am very pleased
