Apple Sells Two Million Copies of Leopard

Apple today announced that it sold over two million copies of Mac OS X Leopard since its release on Friday, far outpacing the first-weekend sales of Mac OS X Tiger, which was previously the most successful OS release in Apple's history. Sales included copies sold at Apple's retail stores, Apple Authorized Resellers, the online Apple Store, under maintenance agreements and bundled with new Mac computers. Leopard is the sixth major release of Mac OS X.
"Early indications are that Leopard will be a huge hit with customers," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Leopard's innovative features are getting great reviews and making more people than ever think about switching to the Mac."
It took Apple five weeks to achieve the same sales level with Tiger. Leopard appears to be off to a really nice start.

| That is pretty impressive. Not that it matters, but I wonder how many copies of Vista sold in the same time period after it came out? |

Don't know, but I bet the boys in Redmond are sweating bullets. Vista is huge flop! Maybe even a bigger flop than Windows ME. 
It will be interesting to see what happens to Leopard and Mac sales in a couple of months though. There was an awful lot of pent-up demand for Leopard after the delays. One thing is for sure though, Apple is chugging on all four cylinders. The four cylinders in this case being iTunes, iPod, iPhone and Mac sales.

I was just trying to find out how many MS may have sold, etc, and came up with this:

That's probably accurate. I've seen similar numbers posted elsewhere now. We probably won't find a weekend sales total because Vista went on sale on a Tuesday. |

It doesn't seem like there will be anything else major this year . . . iPhone 2.0 before the holidays maybe? But hopefully Apple has something big planned for MacWorld in January. This Leopard release took a long time and the overall iPhone reviews (AT&T and the price drop included) are mixed. I think they need to do something big to revive their lineup and give all the Leopard adopters fresh options to run this refreshed OS on. |

I could be really wrong on this, but I don't think we'll see much in the way of new hardware until Macworld 2008. Maybe just a small refresh here and there. The MacBook, Mac mini and Mac Pro would be the likely candidates. The MacBook is probably priority number one since notebooks are so hot right now. All in all, I think Apple is locked and loaded for the holiday season. This might be it for 2007.

Revive their lineup? New iMacs, Updated MM's, Updated MBP's, Updated MB's, doesn't get any fresher than that...Unless the new Aluminum MB rumor is true. That may be the only hardware to be debuted at Macworld 08'..

By revive, I meant something(s) new, not a refresh. Yea, their lineup is pretty 'refreshed' but also lacking in variety. I honestly could care less, if nothing comes up by MacWorld, I'll get another Mini, and be content for a few years, thats all there is to it. But there are a lot of others in the Mac world that like to continuously have new toys to play with. Now that all eyes are on Apple and probably will be through the holidays, it would be a good opportunity for Apple to lock in some of those current as well as potential new users with new products.
IB something big @ MacWorld '08 and I'm excited to be going for the first time. |

In the Windows world OS upgrades usually brings new PC offerings to boost sales. At Apple, there are no new hardware offerings for Leopard.
Doesn't make sense. The iPhone got it all I guess. |

That's because PC companies really need to take advantage of the release. They make their money from hardware sales alone. Apple plays both sides of the fence with hardware and software. They can afford to be a little more patient and let the two play off each other. Apple also has a closed and controlled system. They aren't competing with every Tom, Dick and Harry for hardware sales. The PC world as you know is cutthroat. Plus, the current Apple line really is that shabby. They have a pretty nice mix across the board. All of the systems are quite capable of handling Leopard. |
