For those interested in trying Linux on Apple hardware, I can tell you that it runs really well; at least Ubuntu does. I have been making the switch from OSX to Ubuntu slowly over the past few years, ...

My 2012 mini is running El Capitan and I'm having no problems with it. I think it actually runs a bit faster than Yosemite.

sudo chflags nohidden /Users

Hopefully that will do the trick.

No, not at all. But you are more limited as to what you can do with it in the future than with the older models. So if you think you might ultimately need the bigger processor or more RAM, you have to ...

I have a 2009, 2011 and 2012 mini, all in use. The way I have kept them "fresh" is to upgrade the RAM and put SSD's in them. Even the 2009 flies with these upgrades. Unlike the current model ...

I have a 2009 mini that I upgraded with 8GB RAm and a 500GB SSD. It runs Yosemite, and is very responsive. It's a perfectly good computer for all but the most processor and video-intensive uses.

Building on papercut's suggestion, try plugging in other drives to the mini's usb port to make sure it is working. One other thought: sometimes usb devices need more power than a single usb port suppl ...
